14 Thousand Dollars Raised at KU for Ukraine Event

By: Sara McDonough

The KU community raised just over 14 thousand dollars for the KU for Ukraine fund at an event Monday night.

The fund was set up by the KU Department of Slavic and Eurasian Languages & Literatures, KU International Affairs, and the KU Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies.

Dr. Vitaly Chernetsky and Dr. Oleksandra Wallo, both professors in the Department of Slavic and Eurasian Languages and Literatures, shared personal stories from the war in Ukraine.

Faculty from the Department of Theatre and Dance recited poems by Ukrainian poets, and the KU School of Music performed Ukrainian music.

Wallo said the event is important to her because she is Ukrainian and has family in Ukraine.

“It’s been heartbreaking and devastating to see what is happening in Ukraine – to see so much loss of life for absolutely no reason,” Wallo said.

The goal of the fund is to provide support for Ukrainian students at KU, and give KU the opportunity to host Ukrainian students and scholars.

“It means a lot to see that there is support and help and warmth on the other side of the world. That there are many people across the world who are taking this seriously, who are wanting to help and contribute to making even a small difference to someone who could have a year at KU away from wartime,” Wallo said.

A spokesperson for KU Endowment announced at the event that once the fund hits 20 thousand dollars, a donor will match that.
