KU Announces Plans for New Bus Station

Lawrence Transit to begin construction on bus facility

The bus system in Lawrence is adding a new transfer facility for busses. Rerouting is also in progress as Lawrence Transit hopes to start construction as early as June.

Lawrence Transit partnered with the University of Kansas to design a plan for a new multimodal bus transfer facility. The facility will be located at the corner of Bob Billings and Crestline Dr.

This switch from its original location in downtown Lawrence will allow buses to access more residents, and serves as a central hub for all buses. Campus buses will have direct access to major streets like Iowa and 6th.

The facility’s location is less than a mile away from KU’s campus, giving more students access to buses heading all over Lawrence.

“Living near that will be the best place in Lawrence to live without needing a car,” Lawrence Transit and Parking Manager Adam Weigel said. “There will be very frequent service between the new facility, campus, and downtown.”

A route redesign is also in progress. This gives buses a wider range to reach more residential areas.

The hub also includes 10 sawtooth bus bays which allow buses to pull in at an angle. This eliminates buses from blocking transit traffic as they can now come and go with ease.

Also included in the facility are bike racks, restrooms and a weather canopy to keep riders dry on rainy days.

Lawrence Transit is in its final stages of preparation. It plans to start construction this summer and finish in January 2023.
