City Commission Candidates Discuss Parking in Downtown Lawrence

The six city commission candidates are split down the middle about parking rates and penalties in downtown Lawrence.

Jennifer Ananda, Bassem Chahine, and Matthew Herbert don’t think Lawrence should raise parking rates or add more severe penalties like towing or booting cars that haven’t fed the meter.

Ananda says she wants to modernize parking systems so meters can also take credit cards.

Chahine says he doesn’t see a current problem with parking but in the future, there will be.

Herbert says he doesn’t want to drive people away from parking downtown because of higher parking rates.

Mike Anderson, Lisa Larsen, and Dustin Stumblingbear say the city should have higher rates and more penalties.

Anderson says he wants to take away 15-minute parking and build more two hour and eight hour parking lots

Whoever wins the three open commission seats tomorrow will also need to consider requiring apartment developers to prove they will have sufficient parking.
