Former KU Hoops Coach Hopeful to Make it to Tulsa

What does a northeast snowstorm have to do with the First Round of the NCAA Tournament all the way in Tulsa, Oklahoma?

It’s keeping former SMU and KU head coach Larry Brown from arriving at the BOK Center to see the Mustangs and Jayhawks tip off on Thursday.

“He’s trying to get here, he’s stuck in New York with the snow storm,” coach Bill Self said. “He’s trying hard to get here to cheer on, obviously, his Mustangs, which he recruited those guys … and then obviously watch us play as well.”

Brown was a regular at Allen Fieldhouse during the regular season, seated behind the Jayhawk’s bench, a spot he grazed from 1983 to 1988.

Self joined Brown’s staff at Kansas in ’85 for just a season. The future Kansas coach was replacing future Kentucky coach John Calipari.

The Southern Methodist Mustangs and Kansas Jayhawks will play Friday afternoon at the BOK Center.
