Lawrence Officials Warn of Utilities Scam

City Hall and the Lawrence Police Department are warning residents to watch our for a new scam that is making its way around the city in which scammers pose as utility workers.

Scammers have been contacting customers over the phone acting as a representative from the Lawrence Utilities Department. Once on the phone, they request information related to a customer’s bank account, but the city says that they don’t verify checking account information over the phone.

There is no word on how many have been affected by the scam.

There is another scam occurring around town in which a caller poses as a member of the Sheriff’s Office saying that they is a warrant out for your arrest and asks for your social security number and payment via credit card.
