Last night festival promoters announced that the Wakarusa festival will be leaving Lawrence for Arkansas. The move of the festival could hurt local businesses as well as fans. According to Paul Davis, general manager of Sunflower Outdoor and Bike, the festival brought in business for camping gear. However, Davis said that it benefited businesses in the southwestern part of town more. Regardless, Davis believes the festival benefited the Lawrence community and while likewise be missed.
"The revenue generated from it, I think, helps some local clubs. The mountain bike club would sell beer and that's where they'd generate a fair number of profits so that they could sustain their club and I think that's going to be missed. And then, just, Lawrence being on the map and something like that is going to be missed too," Davis said.
The new location for the festival is in Ozark, Arkansas.
