Party America and Spirit Halloween stores both began stocking their shelves for Halloween at the end of July. Gwen Billings, Owner of Fun and Games, said the store had to move to a larger space to accommodate the rising demand they were seeing for Halloween supplies.

"As a child we did trick-or-treating. We did Halloween, but it wasn't such a big production," said Billings. "Now it seems more like it is a time for partying; like it is a good excuse to get dressed up."

Local managers say that Halloween has become more of an adult holiday. They say that the majority of costume seekers in Lawrence are college students who are looking to get something to wear to parties.

While the local options have faced rising competition from online stores in recent years, many are still choosing to shop in Lawrence for their Halloween attire.
