Graciella Kowalczyk, a KU doctoral student from Poland, won first place in two competitions last month and is now gearing up to take the stage with symphonies in Kansas City and Jefferson City, Mo.

Kowalczyk has performed in 15 countries on four continents. Kowalczyk is excited to premier a piece of music close to her heart.

"I'm performing a Fantasia on Polish Themes. It is a very rare piece and I feel it will be actually the Kansas City and Midwest premier of this piece," said Kowalczyk.

She said premiering this piece from her homeland adds extra responsibility. However, both pieces are among her favorites.

While Kowalczyk may not be nervous about the upcoming performances, her professor Jack Winerock said that the performances can open doors for future performances.

"It's very prestigious to play with an orchestra. So winning concerto competitions is very important in a young person's career," said Jack Winerock, piano professor.

On Tuesday, Kowalczyk will perform with the Jefferson City Symphony on the Lincoln University campus in Jefferson City, Mo. Following this performance, she will be preparing for the Kansas City Philharmonica's Season Finale on May 30.
