Those who went downtown to do some shopping over the weekend may have come home with a dance lesson and a new pair of dancing shoes. The Lied Center teamed up with the Lawrence Arts Center to host Dance Across Lawrence, a public event to show a wide variety of dancing to the public.

Dance Across Lawrence held several exhibitions all over the downtown area. The event consisted of free dance performances and lessons for the public. Dance styles varied from Baroque dance styles to hip hop classes.

With 14 different types of dance showcased, organizers hoped there was a little bit of something for everyone.

"The goal is kind of to appeal to all different types of people [through] variety," said Christina Gekas, Lied Center intern. "You know if they were there taking the hip hop class, that's what they like."

The event ended Saturday night with a performance by world renowned dancer Karole Armitage.

The idea for Dance Across Lawrence originated in Boston. This was the first time an event like this was held in Lawrence.
