An infamous bar got a make-over, a new owner and a re-done marketing strategy.
Club Axis, 821 Iowa, opens tonight on the grounds of the former Moon Bar, the establishment where ex-Jayhawk J.R. Giddens was stabbed in 2005.
The club hopes to end the negative image from the spring 2005 when a fight outside escalated and an Olathe man slashed Giddens with a knife. Giddens later transferred to the University of New Mexico.
Axis general manager Chris Windler said the club will enforce a dress code to cull undesirable customers.
"We're a dress-to-impress club," Windler said. "We want people that aren't wearing baggy clothes. No gang apparel of any kind, no jerseys except on KU game-days. We like people that wear nice t-shirts or collared shirts."
Jeans are allowed, Windler said, as long as they aren't baggy.
Axis' target demographic is 21-25 years old. The club features four VIP rooms with bottle service, and customers may purchase bottles of alcohol only if they are in the VIP areas.
Doors open at 9 p.m.
