State lawmakers may vote in favor of allowing casinos and slot machines to boost school funding.
Casino poker games could provide the necessary revenue to help support school finance plans setup by the state senate. One plan includes a $660 million dollar increase in education but the source of revenue determines whether enough money can fund the second and third years of the plan.
Lawrence High Associate Principal Matthew Brungardt says that gaming in the state is part of a general fund that would help provide money for schools.
"My understanding of all these conversations that are going on in the House and the Senate is this money would go to the general fund and one of the things it would pay for is education," Brungardt said.
Senate President Steve Morris is confident that the gambling bill will pass allowing for two casinos in Wyandote County and in southeast Kansas and as many as 7,000 slot machines.
State officials estimate Kansas will receive $200 million dollars in revenue from gambling each year.
