Two University of Colorado professors are a step closer to digging up a 127-year-old cadaver in a Lawrence cemetery.

The city has approved an exhumation petition, so Mimi Wesson and Dennis Van Gerven, professors at the University of Colorado, are now waiting for approval from Douglas County District Court.

As we first reported last month, Wesson and Van Gerven want to examine the remains of a man that may or may not be John Wesley Hillman.

Hillmon's accidental death by gunfire was reported near Medicine Lodge, in 1879, but three insurance companies carrying policies on Hillman, which totaled $25,000, doubted the incident and went to the United States Supreme Court. Arguments in the case went on for about 20 years.
