Students in the KU School of Architecture and Urban Design head to New Orleans Thursday, embarking on a multi-year plan to construct a community center in the Seventh Ward.

KU teamed up with Tulane University and the Neighborhood Housing Services of New Orleans to help rebuild the city.

Robert Corser, University of Kansas assistant architecture professor feels it's a remarkable opportunity for his students.

"As professionals, as architects, we feel a sense of community service and commitment to that. And this kind of thing for us as architects and professors is not only great community service, its great teaching," Corser said.

In a warehouse on KU's West Campus the 17 architecture students have designed and constructed bulletin boards. These bulletin boards will allow citizens to post anything from announcements to searches for loved ones.

"The students have a great sense of urgency and importance of being involved in something as big as helping people rebuild their houses and rebuild their lives, " Corser said.

"I think the most important thing is to get a feel for the neighborhood we are going to be building in," said Laura Lafoe, Ballwin, MO senior.
