Lawrence roads are deteriorating and city officials said it is time to start rebuilding and repairing roads. A recent report showed approximately 31 percent of Lawrence streets are beyond the point of repair.

Signs of deterioration include cracks, uneven pavement and pot holes. Twenty-first St. between Tennessee and Louisiana show a desperate need for repairs. Another troubled road is W.13th St. between Louisiana and Oread. In many cases these roads need to be rebuilt rather than simply repaired.

"Lawrence has a significant number of roads in need of major repairs," said Steve Lashley, project engineer and infrastructure manager. "It could take years for all the roads in Lawrence to be repaired to meet city standards."

City council members hope reconstruction can begin this spring.
