For a senior class that started the tunraround of Kansas football, a winning season and a bowl victory was the perfect way to end what fans are now calling a new era of KU football.
The Jayhawks (7-5) came into Fort Worth, TX along with thousands of fans and defeated the Cougars (6-6) 42-13 Friday night in the 2005 Fort Worth Bowl. KU senior quarterback, Jason Swanson was named MVP of the game. Swanson threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns. He now owns the total net yards record in the Fort Worth Bowl with 340 yards.
KU Junior, Jon Cornish ran for 101 yards and two receiving touchdowns.
The Jayhawk defense maintained their reputation of the best rush defense and completly shut down the Cougar's rush offense, making them offensively one-dimensional. KU's Charlton Keith and Theo Banes both picked off passes from the Cougar's Kevin Kolb in the fourth quarter. The KU offense took advantage of the defense's work scoring touchdowns after the interceptions.
The win ends KU's season with a winning record for the first time in 10 years. This was also coach Mark Mangino's third win away from Lawrence and the first bowl victory after falling to NC State in the 2003 Tangerine Bowl. Mangino's record at KU improves to 19-29.
