A play called "badger", that's all it took for Kansas (7-0, 0-0 Big 12) to tie Wisconsin (4-5 0-0 Big Ten) in the second half after being down by 18 points. Badger made Erica Hallman wide open for a three, starting a late game-scoring streak for the senior.
Kansas started the game strong offensively leading by four at the 16:28 mark in the first half. The Jayhawks soon fell into an offensive slump, allowing Wisconsin to take control of the game, leading by 18 with 2:13 remaining in the half.
Wisconsin's Ashley Josephson nailed three, three-pointers, along with five of eight field goals, hitting almost everything when left open. The Badgers shot 44 percent in the half. Kansas shot 42 percent in the first half but was held to 34 attempted shots.
Defense made the difference in the second half. The Jayhawks held the Badgers to 35 percent on field goals and two of four three-pointers. The Kansas defense didn't seem like it was going to be enough until Kansas, down three put in "badger".
Kansas head coach, Bonnie Henrickson said the team put the play into use about a week ago. Henrickson said the team asked her what the name of the play was called and she said "Badger, that's who we're playing, right?"
"Badger" was successful for Kansas, as Hallman got open, nailing the three to tie the game.
Regulation ended with the game tied at 70. In the first overtime, Wisconsin won the tip, and quickly went up 72-70. Kansas answered and after an Wisconsin offensive foul. The ‘Hawks led 81-79 with seconds remaining. The Badger's Jolene Anderson heaved the ball with one hand from beyond the arc at the buzzer, sinking a three-pointer to send the game into a second overtime.
In the second overtime, Kansas had multiple opportunities to seal the game, but missed free throws allowed Wisconsin a chance to tie the game and an attempt for a third overtime. With a little less than 20 seconds remaining, the Badgers moved the ball down court and missed two attempts at three-pointers, giving the Jayhawks their biggest win of the season.
The women's basketball team wants KU students and fans to come watch one game promising fans will get hooked. Ivana Catic said if you saw this game you would want to come back and watch another.
The undefeated Jayhawks look to continue their win streak on December 18th as they take on Florida International at 1 p.m. at Allen Fieldhouse.
