Kansas is one of nearly 20 states close to unveiling a plan for sales tax on online purchases.

Kansas currently does not collect sales tax from Internet purchases outside the state. In a study completed by the University of Tennesse it is estimated that Kansas loses up to $81,000,000 a year in uncollected taxes.

The Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board says the plan would let merchants collect some of the sales tax from out-of-state customers.

Although the state would benefit from the plan, John Hood and other Lawrence online business owners disagree. The business owners believe the new plan may be too complicated and even more costly than what is currently in place.
