Douglas County growth is on pace to become over capacity by 2011.
Douglas County Commissioners, along with the Lawrence City Commission, have discussed plans to create a new Waste Water Treatment plant.
The new plant is expected to cost around $76 million, but the location has created a dilemma.
A new treatment plant would bring many jobs and also many kids to the area. That's why Douglas County officials are reviewing what school district would benefit from the location.
"Obviously, schools are extremely important, but there's a whole area down there, blacken beach, along with city of Lawrence and Douglas County including the school district who are going to be involved in helping make that decision," Mike Amyx, City Commissioner, said.
If the plant was located west of Highway 59, the Lawrence school district would benefit. But if the plant is east of Highway 59, the Baldwin school district would receive the extra students.
