Manhattan voters may be on a smoking ban in the workplace as early as August 2006. The proposed ban is similar to the one implemented in Lawrence last year. The ordinance would prohibit smoking in the workplace which includes bars and restaurants.
Manhattan Deputy City Manager Diane Stoddard said that the ban is still in the very preliminary stages.
"There is no timeline," Stoddard said. "Right now, we are just doing research and then provide that information to the city coommission."
Some people in Manhattan have already expressed their concerns about possible impacts on businesses as a result of an ordinance, Stoddard said. However, there has been no consensus as to what those impacts might be.
The city commission plans to examine various options before the vote, but those options are yet to be explored.
