Since 1993, the University of Kansas Applied Portfolio Management class has taken a $230,000 donation and turned it into almost $1 million through the stock market.

KU alumnus Kent McCarthy made the original donation to provide students an opportunity to make real investments in the stock market.

The students are expected to research companies and make recommendations before investing so they will learn how to make research-based decisions for buying and selling stocks. Class director Catherine Shenoy said that overall the students had invested well.

"We limit the number of stocks that we own, so the students can learn about those and then we hear about everyone's best ideas," Shenoy said. "I think it works pretty well."

Shenoy said about 15 percent of the money is invested in Chinese equities, while about 25 percent of the total fund is invested internationally.
