The University of Kansas' football team earned its fifth win of the season on Saturday, but this victory was much sweeter than the previous four. The 40-15 win marks the first time the ‘Hawks have defeated the Nebraska 'Huskers since 1968.
The Jayhawk defense was solid as usual, but the offense was uncharacteristically potent. They had 428 yards of total offense, compared to Nebraska's 138 yards of total offense.
Senior quarterback Jason Swanson passed for 215 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. His primary receiver was senior Mark Simmons, whose 100-yard performance put him second in yardage on KU's all-time list. He currently has 2,031 receiving yards as a Jayhawk, just 235 yards short of the all-time yardage record of 2,266, set by Willie Vaughn in the mid-‘80's.
The Jayhawks had the ball for ten minutes more than Nebraska thanks to a strong running game. Senior tailback Jon Cornish led the ‘Hawks with 101 yards on 10 carries. Senior tailback Clark Green tallied another 100 yards on 22 carries and had 46 yards receiving.
The 40 points posted by the ‘Hawks are the most scored over Nebraska in a century of competition. The win snaps a 36-year-long streak that was the second-longest active streak in the country behind Notre Dame's 41 straight wins over Navy.
