It's been nearly a month since a fire ripped through the 500 block of Fireside Drive at the Boardwalk Apartments complex. Since then, items have been collected for victims of the fire that killed three residents.
"Since we had the container available here and the Boardwalk fire situation came up, we were able to use the container as well to collect things for victims from the Boardwalk fire," Bryon Edmondson, Director of Needs Ministry, said.
The Leo Center, One Riverfront Plaza, is a Christian organization that provides counseling and financial services to those in need. Fire victims can go there for necessities such as clothing and kitchen ware.
"It's kind of miscellanous things. Now it's a matter of matching the needs with the resources," Edmondson said.
Edmondson said that because relief efforts for the fire came to a close, he would have to return the storage unit tomorrow and find another place to store remaining items.
"We're going to temporary storage at Victory Bible, but they do not have a lot of space there," Edmondson said. "So we're trying to work with it as best we can."
On Oct. 11, Lawrence police arrested 20-year-old Jason Allen Rose in connection with the fire. He is being held in the Douglas County Jail on three counts of felony murder and one count of aggravated arson.
Maintenance crews for Boardwalk Apartments could not comment, but said they were busy last month painting apartments and repairing broken doors that were kicked in by firefighters.
Fire victims in need should contact Edmondson for help at (785) 856-3620.
