In an effort to promote safe cycling, The KU Public Safety Office. and the City of Lawrence has partnered with two local bike shops to provide free bicycle lights to KU students. Cycle Works, 2121 Kasold Dr., and Sunflower Outdoor and Bike Shop., 804 Massachusetts have agreed to provide lights at a discounted price, and the City of Lawrence will cover the costs for 250 lights.

According to a press release from the KU Public Safety Office, officers will be distributing coupons redeemable for a light from both bike shops. Coupon distribution will take place at various campus locations in both the fall and spring semesters until all the coupons are gone.

"We're excited to partner with the city and the bike shops fro this program," Captain Schuyler Bailey of the Public Safety Office said in a press release. "It allows our officers an opportunity to interact in a very positive way with our students, while providing them information about safe cycling and a light for their bike."

City ordinance mandates that cyclists have working headlamps on their bicycles.
