The pharmaceutical development process is more complex today than in the past because developing new pharmaceutical technology and getting FDA approval are costly. The University of Kansas works with 11 other universities and the FDA to create institutes that provide safe and effective drugs at a lower cost.
The collaboration is called the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology and Education (NIPTE). .
Associate vice provost for research George Wilson said that KU will organize the required expertise to develop pharmaceutical technology through the chemical and petroleum engineering and chemistry departments and the School of Pharmacy.
"We have, for example here, considerable capability in synthesis of molecules. Therefore, our synthetic people will be involved in developing better ways to synthesize the drugs so that they can be manufactured at lower cost," said Wilson.
The University of Kansas press release says the FDA reported last year that the cost of bringing a new drug to market can cost up to $1.7 billion.
