Already, there's been speculation about the dangers of an avian flu outbreak in the United States. If an outbreak becomes a reality, local health departments, including Douglas County's, will need to be prepared.

Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department officials said they were already planning for a possible local bird flu outbreak. The department is identifying possible mass vaccination sites, including Free State High School, Allen Fieldhouse and the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

Disease control program coordinator Kim Ens said that people should be informed, but not alarmed, about the possibility of an outbreak.

"They're hearing a lot of different things on the news and it is scary," Ens said. "But we don't want to scare people. We want to inform people what's going on."

No cases of bird flu have been reported in the United States, but a form of avian flu has been found in wild birds of Canada.
