Organization Rallies for Lawrence Librarians

By: Sara McDonough

Save Our Schools USD 497, an organization started by Lawrence School District parents, rallied on Monday before a Lawrence School Board meeting in support of librarians.

The school board proposed budget cuts last week that would cut 12 of the 18 librarian positions in the district.

“Tonight we’re coming together to ask that they don’t make such a deep cut to our library programs across the district,” Shannon Berquist said, a founding member of Save Our Schools.

Call and response chants like “When public education is under attack, what do we do? Stand up fight back!” were heard at the rally.

Many different community members like parents, teachers, librarians and students joined the rally.

“I think that rallies are really important just to create that sense of community, that sense of coming together and knowing that you’re not alone,” Berquist said.

Jennifer Bonilla, a librarian at Billy Mills Middle School, appreciated how the community came out to support librarians.

“The show of support and solidarity, to not just the librarians but also the classified staff,” Bonilla said.

Many organizers who joined the rally stayed to attend the school board meeting. The school board voted to keep 16 librarian positions.
