Lawrence Police Department Prepares for Final Four Celebration

This is not the first time the University of Kansas Men’s Basketball Team has made it to the final four so the Lawrence police department is prepared for this weekend’s anticipated celebrations. In talks with the city and community stakeholders – Lawrence police have a master plan on how to manage the large crowds. They have also given information to businesses about navigating the madness. But police say last Sunday when fans stormed mass street it was a good time and nothing went wrong.

“The crowd downtown was one of the largest Elite Eight crowds that we’ve had that I can remember. Everybody was very well-behaved. There were no incidents, we didn’t take any police reports from that, nobody was arrested.” said Lieutenant Amy Rhoads

A series of streets will be closed on Saturday and potentially Monday as well. The City of Lawrence said they plan to close Massachusetts Street from 6th to South Park to two phases on Saturday, as the Jayhawks face Villanova in New Orleans. The first phase starts at 6 a.m. from 6th to 11th and the second phase at around 3 p.m. from 6th to South Park.
