Senate Republicans are now trying to put tax cuts and health care in the same bill, but this could derail the process.
Republicans want to repeal the Obamacare individual mandate that requires individuals to have health insurance or pay a penalty. They say this will free up $338 billion for tax cuts.
The congressional budget office estimates that 13 million Americans would not have health care as a result of this, also driving up premiums by 10 percent.
According to minority leader Chuck Schumer, the Republicans are cutting taxes on the wealthy and taking healthcare away from millions.
“The Republican tax plan, even before yesterday, would exacerbate income inequality at a time when it’s already spiraling out of control,” said Schumer.
The money saved by the repeal of the mandate will reduce income tax rates for middle income taxpayers and boost the child tax credit from $1,650 to $2000.
