City workers will hang about 130,000 lights downtown this season, including 10,000 more lights to enhance the experience. Lawrence uses LED lights to conserve energy, and each strand can last about three holiday seasons. Covering every tree is a two-to-three-week process.
“We start at the top and just kind of work our way down. We use poles, other crews use bucket trucks, or cherry pickers other people know them as,” said Brad Hoppe.
If you see some trees already lit, it is probably just a test run. The grand lighting ceremony will be the day after Thanksgiving.
