When Landen Lucas’ career at Kansas ended, he wanted to create something to benefit students who don’t have the opportunity to participate in sports at a younger age. So, he came up with the Sports For Life Fund through his foundation.
Sports for life will be providing scholarships for underprivileged students in the Lawrence school district and in the Portland/Beaverton school districts and around the states. Lucas has seen the great value of life lessons learned through sports and wants to be sure that all students have the opportunity to participate and compete.
“I know growing up I needed help with [being able to afford fees for camps, equipment, shoes, etc] through different family members and friends, and so to be able to provide the for the youth is what our goal is,” Lucas said.
In returning to Lawrence in May, Lucas was able to meet with and give out some of the first of 20 scholarships to local students at South Middle School.
The outpouring of support and donations just proved to Lucas that beginning his foundation along wit the scholarship fund was the best decision. Donations will contribute directly to sports fees, equipment, shoes and valuable life lessons for students who cannot afford to participate in sports.
