Film documentary producer Joe McGovern traveled to 35 states in the U.S. asking candid questions to Republican supporters in hopes to explore the political divide. The Dole Institute of Politics invited McGovern to preview and discuss his documentary to a Lawrence audience.
In the documentary “The Other Side: A Liberal Democrat Explores Conservative America,” McGovern explores seven issues in American politics including the size of government, welfare, environment, abortion, gay marriage, racism and immigration. McGovern says the best way to deal with these polarizing subjects is to watch for hyperbole.
According to McGovern hyperbole is useful when you need to express an emotion, not when holding discussions with one another. McGovern says the best way to talk and deal with polarizing subjects is to watch for the use of hyperbole.
One audience member in the crowd said the invention of social media is damaging our ability to hold constructive political discussion. McGovern agreed, saying he has learned more about that with every interview he did in the documentary.
McGovern’s greatest lesson from his documentary, is that republicans and democrats really can get along. Everyone has his or her own views for a reason, whether it is learned from family or through lessons in their life.
