KU students have a chance to bring changes to the Kansas Union. Students will vote on a referendum to add $50 to student fees to fund the renovations of the Kansas Union.
Student group Redo Your U formed to help students see the benefits renovations could have and to sway them to vote in favor of the action.
“The benefit that will be received from a $50 student fee increase is astronomical,” Redo Your U student ambassador Bailee Myers said. “Students will be able to come into the Union and have better spaces to work within. They’ll have better spaces to grow in.”
The Kansas Union needs extensive work. Renovations would create not only new spaces for students, but also update heating and air conditioning. The current HVAC system takes days to switch from heat to air and has not been updated for more than 50 years.
“We’re having a lot of unnecessary or unexpected repairs,” KU director of building services Lisa Kring said. “We have air handling units that are from the 50s and air handling units have gotten a lot more efficient since 1950.”
If the vote passes, the $50 fee increase would not go into effect until 2019 when construction would begin. Voting will take place on April 13 and 14.
