Some are skeptical of the $70 million outdoor adventure park that might be coming to Clinton Park in Lawrence.
The state of Kansas contacted owner and CEO of the U.S. National Whitewater Center Jeff Wise to create another center in Lawrence. The process started 2 1/2 years ago and Wise says Lawrence is a progressive town with the potential for bigger and better things that could feature an adventure park.
But big projects come with big price tags. Some Lawrence residents are questioning where the funding will come from and how it will be possible. If the facility becomes official, the funds will come through Star Bonds.
“Star Bonds is a process that Kansas and other states use,” Wise said. “Kansas involves taking the sales tax from a defind district for a defend period of time and taking new dollars that come in from that district and applying that to a project that has economic development primarily on the lines of tourist destinations.”
The facility holds not only adventure activities but could potentially host concerts, summer camps and education courses. Wise explains there are many opportunities to pay off the funds.
There will be an information session on the project Thursday March 9th at 10:30 a.m. at the Sport Pavilion of Lawrence.
