At the City Commission meeting last night, the Bicycle Advisory Committee proposed a plan to create new bicycle traffic signs around Lawrence. The signs will aim to educate motorists and cyclists on Kansas traffic laws and prevent future accidents.
The signs will include “Bikes May Use Full Lane” and “3-Ft. Passing.” The Bicycle Advisory Committee noted in Commission minutes that some motorists and bicyclists are unsure how to share the road safely.
Kansas Department of Transportation’s most recent accident statistics reveal that in 2014, there were 320 accidents involving cyclists, with seven resulting in fatalities.
The approved traffic signs will be installed when funding is available.
