Out of more than 200 million eligible voters in the United States, 90 million of them chose not to vote in the 2016 election. However, his wasn’t the case in Douglas County.
More than 80,000 people are registered to vote in Douglas County, and almost 50,000 of them chose to vote in the election. This is more than a 1,000 vote increase from the presidential election in 2012. The county clerk says they also saw more advanced votes than ever before.
“We set a record for early voting, so our record was 16,000 and it was 21,000 yesterday,” Douglas County Clerk Jamie Shew said.
The ease of advanced voting may have caused the increase of votes in Douglas County. The amount of advanced votes cast also increased by more than two percent across the nation.
The increase in advanced votes is because more states are offering it. As of November 2016, 34 states now let voters cast ballots before the polls officially open.
