The Kansas men’s basketball team started the NCAA Tournament with a 105-79 win over the Austin Peay State Governors. Freshman guard Svi Mykhailiuk scored a career-high 23 points off the bench to lead Kansas in just 24 minutes of playing time.
Mykhailiuk did not even score during the final two Big 12 tournament games against Baylor and West Virginia. However, the performance was no surprise to teammate Devonte’ Graham.
“When he’s aggressive he can play like that on any given night,” said Graham.
Throughout the season, Mykhailiuk has flashed potential on multiple occasions.
“This has happened with him before in some situations where he’s had some big nights and then last awhile and then maybe he’ll fade a little bit,” said Kansas head coach Bill Self. “But he was confident … he looked great tonight.”
The top-seeded Jayhawks move on to the second round of NCAA play to face Connecticut on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 6:45 p.m. on CBS.
