Letters from a Leader: Phog Allen to Bob Dole, 1938-1939

LAWRENCE – The Dole Institute of Politics is currently displaying the exhibit “Letters from a Leader: Phog Allen to Bob Dole, 1938-1939”. The letters document the early relationship between Basketball coach Phog Allen and a young, 14 year old Bobby Dole.
At the time, dole was an aspiring basketball player whom Allen was recruiting for the university of Kansas. Allen anticipated dole’s success, and later offered him a spot on the freshman basketball team in 1941. A year later, dole advanced to play on the varsity squad. The letters are a collection of KU’s archives from the KU library, and can be found in the dole institute of politics.
A new fundraising campaign has begun to preserve and digitize the documents. Funds collected will allow these letters to be accessed online while also connecting alumni to the collection.
The Letters will be on view and open to the public now until April 15th. Donations can be made in person at the Dole Institute of Politics or online at Doleinstitute.org.
